Is Instinct Rational? Are Animals Intelligent? An Abductive Account

چکیده

The concept of abduction can be useful to clarify the conflict instinct vs. inference in cognitive science. The resulting idea that abduction is partly explicable as a biological instinctual phenomenon and partly as a more or less “logical” operation related to “plastic” cognitive endowments of all organisms naturally leads to stress that many animals – traditionally considered “mindless” organisms – make up a series of signs and are engaged in making, manifesting or reacting to a series of signs. Through this semiotic activity – which is considerably model-based – they are at the same time engaged in “being cognitive agents” and therefore in thinking intelligently. An important effect of this semiotic activity is a continuous process of “hypothesis generation” that can be seen at the level of both instinctual behavior, as a kind of “hardwired” cognition, and representation-oriented behavior, where nonlinguistic pseudothoughts drive a plastic model-based cognitive role. Another important character of the abductive modelbased cognitive activity above is the externalization of artifacts that play the role of mediators in animal languageless “thinking”. That is, the interplay between internal and external representations exhibits a new cognitive perspective on the mechanisms underlying the semiotic emergence of abductive processes in important areas of model-based thinking of mindless organisms.

Common Cause Abduction : Its Scope and Limits

This article aims to analyse the scope and limits of common cause abduction which is a version of explanatory abduction based on Hans Reichenbach’s Principle of the Common Cause. First, it is argued that common cause abduction can be regarded as a rational mechanism for inferring abductive hypotheses that aim to account for the surprising correlations of events. Three arguments are presented in...

Some Pragmatic Considerations of Human and Intelligent System Interaction and Cooperation

The rational-empirical process was first proposed by the pragmatic philosopher Peirce to describe the manner in which a rational agent’s hypotheses are empirically validated and functioning in a social context. Sowa (2002) has updated and broadened these ideas as part of a knowledge cycle made up interacting abductive processes and a “knowledge soup” of micro-theories that are loosely assembled...

Planning Agents

Agents are entities that act upon the world. Rational agents are those that do so in an intelligent fashion. What is essential to such an agent is the ability to select and perform actions. Actions are selected by planning, and performing such actions is a matter of plan execution. So the essence of a rational agent is the ability to make and execute plans. This constitutes practical cognition....

Belief Revision Controlled by Meta-abduction

We describe an abductive reasoning agent that is able to change its mind and appropriately revise previous conclusions when it encounters a reasoning dilemma. Abductive inference (by which we mean “Inference to the Best Explanation”) is an ampliative inferential process; that is, the conclusion goes beyond merely extracting information already present in the premises, perhaps unobviously. Thus,...
